Pfarr has comeback on course

JANESVILLE, Wis. - Havilah Pfarr is working her way back into shape. Cooper Moran, a Turner junior, is still striving to cut time before the season's biggest meets.

Pfarr, a senior running for the Home School Eagles, isn't yet approaching her sophomore season times when she hovered around the 19:45 mark.

But after missing all of her junior season and most of her senior year with complications after a concussion, Pfarr was good enough to easily win Tuesday's Cougar Classic, held at Cecelia's Golf Course. Pfarr's time of 21:02 was nearly 90 seconds faster than her teammate, Molly Claire Vogel, ran.

Pfarr said it felt great to be back in the swing of things.

"It was very hard for me to sit out those meets," Pfarr said. "And then when I came back, it was really hard to know that I could be running at the front of the pack. But it's been great to start to feel healthy again. I couldn't have done it without the support of my teammates."

Pfarr, a native of Clinton, said the course, which featured several hills and a trip around the driving range, was unusual.

"The course was so up and down and there were a lot of obstacles, and I liked the fact that it was a challenge," Pfarr said. "But you never have a chance to slow down. You have to constantly continue to push yourself, and there's never any time for your legs to get a rest."

Turner's Sophie Fulk finished in fourth place with a time of 23:16, while Clinton was led by Gracey Garner, who placed ninth with a 24:01.

On the boys side, Moran ran an 18:09, 18 seconds faster than Clinton freshman Quinn McCabe.

Moran has steadily led the Trojans, with an eye on a berth in the WIAA Division 2 state tournament.

Junior David Heldt, who was sidelined earlier in the season, finished Tuesday's meet strong with a third-place finish and a time of 18:35.

Hunter Greer placed 15th with a 19:05 in back of McCabe for the Cougars.

• UP NEXT: Both Turner and Clinton will participate in Saturday's meet in Albany, with the Rock Valley Conference meet in Whitewater looming on Thursday, Oct. 17.
