Snappers take a pair from Bandits

Jim Franz/Beloit Daily News Snappers second baseman Joseph Pena, left, throws to first to compete a DP Sunday against the River Bandits at Pohlman Field.

BELOIT - Two ingredients the Beloit Snappers have had trouble combining very often were featured Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field.

Stingy pitching and timely hitting were a winning formula for the home team as it swept a double-header from the Quad Cities River Bandits. Beloit took the opener 4-1 and earned a 4-3 extra-inning victory in the nightcap on a walk-off home run by Nick Osborne in the bottom of the eighth.

In the opener, Rafael Kelly started on the mound for Beloit (13-22, 40-63) and pitched six solid innings to pick up the victory. He allowed only four hits, with one being a mammoth home run by David Hensley over the center field wall in the third inning.

Hensley's blast tied the game at 1-1. Beloit scored in the first when Max Schuemann doubled and then came around to score when a wild pitch hit the backstop and bounced back toward third base.

The Snappers broke up the tie with three runs in the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead. Joseph Pena walked and Schuemann tapped a bunt in front of the plate. Alex Hoderbach's throw to second was high and both runners reached safely.

Devin Foyle also bunted and reached on a single as pitcher Jose Rivera couldn't get the ball out of his glove, allowing Beloit to load the bases with no outs. Payton Squier's double to left field scored both Pena and Schuemann. Squier scored a batter later when Nick Osborne hit a sacrifice fly to right.

That was more than enough support for Kelly and reliever Charlie Cerny. Kelly struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Cerny earned his sixth save, allowing no runs and no hits. Quad Cities finished with just four hits and six baserunners.

Rivera took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, in five innings.

Beloit scored first in game two. Schuemann doubled and Pena knocked him in with a single.

After the Bandits tied it, John Jones homered in the sixth for a 2-1 lead.

Quad CIties tied it in the seventh and took the lead in the top of the eighth.

Using tie-breaker rules, Pena started the eighth inning at second base and was bunted to third by Anthony Churlin. On a 3-2 pitch, Osborne then hit his rocket out of the ballpark for the walk-off winner off Garrett Gayle.

Beloit starter . Guasch pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits and one run. He walked two and struck out three. . Lebron pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. . Reagan (3-1) collected the victory. He pitched two innings, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned.

Schuemann, Pena and Osborne were all 2-for-4 for Beloit.

• SATURDAY'S RECAP: The Snappers fell 11-4 as All-Star Aiden McIntyre had a rough start. He went four innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits and five walks.

The Snappers turned to infielder Nick Ward to pitch the ninth. It was his third appearance on the mound. In 2 1-3 innings as an emergency pitcher he has allowed only two hits, one ealk and no runs.

• UP NEXT: The Snappers will host the River Bandits at 6:30 p.m. Monday for the final game of the series. RHP Matt Reuppenthal (3-4, 4.34) gets the nod for the River Bandits against Beloit RHP Reid Birlingmair (3-6, 5.01).
