LAKE GENEVA, Wis. - Freshman golfer Griffin Oberneder from Beloit Memorial continued his terrific inaugural season of varsity golf by qualifying for WIAA sectional competition on Tuesday.
Competing in the Badger Regional, Oberneder advanced as the top individual qualifier after shooting a 78 at Hawk's View in Lake Geneva. He finished second overall, trailing only Mukwonago senior Nick Schroeder, who shot a 77.
Sectional competition for Oberneder will be next Tuesday at Edgewood Golf Course in Big Bend.
Mukwonago won the sectional with 331 strokes, followed by Badger, Janesville Parker and Beloit Memorial (398). The Purple Knights' second-best golfer, sophomore Alex Hoey, shot a 100 for 28th place.
Last week, Oberneder shot a 77 in the Big Eight Conference Championships held at Evansville Golf Club. He and four others tied for runnerup honors at 77 with the top score a 74 by Middleton's Kip Sullivan.
• DIVISION 2: Four teams advanced to the WIAA Prairie du Chien Sectional out of the Big Foot Sectional: Edgerton (314), Monroe (375), Clinton (381) and Belleville (388).
The medalist at Grand Geneva Highlands in Lake Geneva was Edgerton's Joe Forsting (71). Clinton was led by Tom Romano (7th, 87), Josiah DuBois (12th, 94) and Joe Wellnitz (16th, 99).
Four individuals advanced to Tuesday at Prairie du Chien: Eric Oliver (9th, 90) and Derrick Oborne (17, 100) of Brodhead, Jaden O'Bel of Evansville and Noah Sweet of Beloit Turner (14, 95).
Brodhead finished fifth (407) and Turner was sixth (430).
