CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Hononegah girls 4x800 meter team broke the school record on Friday with a time of 9:26.66, earning them a spot in the IHSA Class 3A finals at Eastern Illinois University on Saturday.
The foursome of Kaela Stewart, Jordan Tresemer, Hannah Pickard and Taylor Frommer then placed 11th on Saturday with a time of 9:38.31.
• BOYS TRACK: The Hononegah boys track and field team advanced its 4x800 team to the IHSA Class 3A state finals with its performances at the Rockford Guilford Sectional Friday.
The quartet of Nathan Halbrader, Spencer Hielkema, Keith Kline and Braden Meyers finished second in the race with a time of 8:03.96.
The team finished nine seconds behind Huntley but was 24 seconds ahead of third-place Antioch.
Other strong performances for Hononegah included Keaton Anderson placing fifth in the 400 with a 51.78, Andrew Wilson fourth in the 1600 with a 4:32, and Jalen Anderson, who finished third in the 110-hurdles with a time of 15.35 seconds, and fifth in the 400-hurdles with a time of 41.53.
The Indians 4x400 team of Mason Adams, Anderson, Halbrader and Samuel Hayag placed third with a time of 3:28.55, missing out on a stat berth by a little more than a second.
• SOCCER: HONONEGAH 5, ALGONQUIN JACOBS 4: The Indians scored a thrilling victory in the IHSA Class 3A Auburn Regional Friday when senior Julia Barenbaum scored with 1:27 remaining to break a 4-4 tie.
The Indians led 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals by Breanna Culver and Lauren Wedig, Jacobs then scored twice to tie the game before Culver scored again to make it 3-2.
Hononegah's Abi Gribble scored to make it 4-3 before Jacobs again tied the game, setting up Barenbaum's heroics.
Hononegah will face Cary Grove Tuesday in the semifinals of the Rockford Guilford Sectional.
