BELOIT - The Beloit Horseshoe Club will host the 35th annual Team World Horseshoes Tournament this weekend.
Sunday, longtime BHC member and past Tournament Director Earl Paulson will be saluted prior to the stepladder finals at about 2 p.m. at the Telfer Sports and Activity Center.
The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday with Team Wisconsin #1 returning to defend its title in the event, which includes some of the best horseshoe pitchers in the United States. Eight states are represented. The top five teams advance to the step-ladder finals on Sunday.
Wisconsin #1 is led by Penny Steinke with a 71.84 ringer percentage. Other team members include Jim Bilderback (70.28), Aleena Lepak (69.16) and Kein Heinrigtz (59.61).
In addition to Steinke, other pitchers boasting a 70-plus ringer percent include three members of Michigan #1: Tom Williams (74.82), JD Drake (74.71) and Terry Beagle (70.52) and three members of Missouri #1: Edward Griffith (73.05), Gregg Craven (72.18) and Melanie Zerr (71.40).
Other 70-plus pitchers include Theresa Howe of Massachesetts (71.48). Austin Bailey of Illinois #1 (73.61) and James Dunlap of Michigan #2 (70.68).
Wisconsin #1 begins its title defense at 8:30 Friday morning against Missouri #1. Action continues all day with the final competition starting at 7:15 p.m. Saturday's competition begins at 8 a.m. with the final matchups at 6:40.
Sunday's action starts at 8 a.m. with the stepladder finals tentatively at 2:25 p.m. and awards ceremony at 4:30.
