FREEPORT, Ill. - The Hononegah baseball team, NIC-10 champions for the first time since 2013, improved to a sterling 16-1 on the conference slate with a 9-6 win at Freeport Wednesday.

The Indians looked like they would run away with the game when they plated four runs in the first inning and another in the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead with all-everything Tyler Statler on the mound.

But the Pretzels fought back, scoring three times in the third inning to get back into the game.

Each team scored a run in the fourth before Freeport pushed across a pair of runs in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.

Hononegah went ahead in the sixth with a run, then scored two more in the seventh to account for the final score.

Will Hissong picked up the victory in relief. The two teams will battle again Friday in Rockton in the NIC-10 finale.

• SOFTBALL: HONONEGAH 6, ROCKFORD EAST 0: The Indians are also NIC-10 champs as they improved to 17-0 with a home victory against Rockford East.

The Indians will close out the regular season with a game against Freeport Friday.
