PEORIA, Ill. - The Beloit Snappers split a pair of pitchers' duels Monday in Peoria.
The Snappers won game one 2-1 before falling 2-0 to the Chiefs in game two.
In the opener, the Snappers scored their only two runs in the second inning. Logan Farrar and Anthony Churlin led off the frame with back-to-back singles, and Farrar later came home on a single by Devin Foyle for the game's first run.
Skyler Weber chased Churlin home with a single to make it 2-0.
The Chiefs scored their only run in the fourth inning when Brendan Donovan doubled home Nolan Gorman to cut Beloit's lead in half.
Aiden McIntyre (1-1) got the win for Beloit after throwing 5 2-3 innings of terrific ball. McIntyre allowed just three hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out eight.
Eric Marinez continued his outstanding season by retiring the final four hitters in order, striking out one to lower his ERA to a microscopic 0.61 while picking up his fifth save.
In the nightcap, the Snappers managed to out-hit the Chiefs 4-3 but came up empty at the pay window.
Peoria scored the game's only two runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Ivan Herrera and Leandro Cedeno against Beloit starting pitcher Adam Reuss.
Reuss (0-4) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five. Three pitchers shut down the Snappers, combining for 11 strikeouts of Beloit batters.
The Snappers and the Chiefs will meet in game three of their five-game series (highlighted by another doubleheader Wednesday) on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.
