Laun-Smith, relay continue to shine

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Beloit College's Eva Laun-Smith and the 4x100-meter relay team enjoyed another outstanding performance Saturday.

Laun-Smith won the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump and teamed with Aminah Crawford, Genesis Dade and Aleeshah Heinzen to win the 4x100 in the windy Carroll University Invitational. That quartet improved their nationally-ranked time to 48.42 seconds.

Laun-Smith was clocked in 15.11 seconds in the 100 hurdles and won the triple jump with a leap of 11.61 meters (38-feet, 1.25 inches).

The Bucs picked up another first in the 800 from Melissa Pelkey in 2:19.77.

In addition to Laun-Smith's first in the triple jump, Heinzen was second (10.92 meters, 35-10), Lena Ramsey was fourth (10.39 meters, 34-1.25) and Sydney Crockett sixth (10 meters, 32-9.75).

Ramsey and Heinzen finished back-to-back in the 100 dash with Ramsey's 13.16 good for third and Heinzen taking fourth (13.27). Dade posted a season-best time of 1:02.41 in the 400 for fourth and Linnae Capuder added a fourth with a height of 2.80 meters (9-2.25) in the pole vault.

Ramsey was sixth in the long jump with a distance of 4.91 meters (16-1.5) and Jamie Manchen wrapped up the Bucs in the top eight with a season-best finish in the 5,000 crossing the line in 19:46.82 for seventh.

Beloit was fifth in the 10-team meet with 82.5 points. St. Norbert won the title with 184.

• MEN'S RECAP: Matthew Miller, Jose Gutierrez and Scott Fuchs all collected first places.

Miller had a busy day, placing in four events including a top finish in the 110 hurdles (15.93). He added a fifth in the high jump and pole vault (11-10.75) and seventh in the javelin (121-05).

Gutierrez won the 400 in a season-best time of 50.67 and Fuchs was first in the javelin with a heave of 55.69 meters (182-08).

Gutierrez, Xavier Haynes, Isreal Murray and Travis Price teamed up to take second in the 4x100 relay in 45.24.

Dan Arkes was third in the 5,000 (15:39.32) and Avery Sutherland was sixth in the 1,500 (4:18.92).

Charles Sandberg was seventh in the 800 (2:03.78) and Leeland Crum was eighth in the pole vault (11-5).

As a team, Beloit was fifth.
