Schmidt's bat leads BC to rout

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Nick Schmidt was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five runs batted in to lead Beloit College's baseball team to a 15-5 rout of Gordon College settled by the 10-run rule on Tuesday.

Trailing 1-0, the Buccaneers responded with five runs. Mitch Campbell led off with a single and an out later Drew Freitag also singled. Garrison Ferone drew a two-out walk and Schmidt cleared the bases with a double.

Jalen Davis and Ethan Conley drew walks to reload the bases. Bronson Balholm collected a two-run single for a 5-1 lead.

Gordon scored once in the fourth and the Bucs answered again. Ferone and Schmidt led off with singles. Davis reached on an error that allowed Ferone to score. Davis stole second. Balholm hit an RBI single and Campbell belted a two-run double. Another run scored on an error.

Gordon scored twice in the fifth and a single run in the sixth, but the Bucs tallied five runs in the sixth. The Bucs had three hits in the inning, including a double down the left field line by Freitag. Schmidt and Conley had RBI singles.

The Bucs (3-2) had 12 hits in the win. Balholm was 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Campbell was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Freitag was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ferone was 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI.

Jacob Sligar picked up the win on the mound allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out five in 3.1 innings of work.

Monday, Beloit's Terrence Cribbs smacked two home runs in a 9-7 loss to Greenville.

• SOFTBALL: Beloit College slipped to 2-5 with a pair of losses Tuesday in Winter Haven, Fla., 7-1 to Washington College and 2-0 to Wooster.

The bright spot for the Bucs was the pitching of Maddy Pfortmiller against Wooster. She went the distance, allowing two runs while scattering seven hits. She struck out one and walked no one. In the first game, Madi Chrstine scored the lone run. Alyssa Boltik took the loss, allowing six hits and five runs, one earned, in 4 2-3 innings.
