Bay Port edges Middleton for 1st title

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Bay Port captured its first ever WIAA Division 1 state title when it edged Middleton 50-49 Saturday night. at the Resch Center.

Emma Nagel's lay-up put the Pirates up with just two seconds remaining.

Josie Lemirande nailed a trey to put the Cardinals up 49-48 with just 37 seconds left, but Nagel's heroics erased the deficit. Lemirande led the Cardinals with 14 points, while McKenzie Johnson and Emma Krueger each scored 12 to lead the Pirates.

• DIVISION 2: Beaver Dam continued its incredible run through the Division 2 field with an easy 68-48 victory over Monroe Saturday.

The Golden Beavers became the fifth program to win three straight state titles after jumping out to a 10-0 lead and cruising to the win.

Tara Stauffacher led three players scoring in double figures for the Golden Beavers with 15, while Wisconsin recruit Sydney Hilliard scored a game-high 23 points.

• DIVISION 3: Another repeating champion was crowned in Division 3 when Marshall took down Laconia 64-56 to win its second straight title.

With the game tied early in the second half, Marshall went on a decisive 11-2 run that put the game out of reach.

Marshall was led by Anna Lutz's 26 points, while Kiarra Otto led Laconia with 27.

• DIVISION 4: Aquinas was yet another school to repeat as champs as the Blugolds dominated Melrose-Mindoro 65-39 to finish the season with a 27-1 record.

The lead was just 23-20 at halftime, but the Blugolds went on a 15-0 run to start the second half and cruised from there.

Lexi Donarski led Aquinas with 22 points, while Erika Simmons led the Mustangs with 12 points and nine rebounds.

• DIVISION 5: Black Hawk capped a perfect 28-0 season by defeating Clayon 51-36 Saturday, giving the program its first ever state title.

The game was tied at 21 at halftime before the Warriors scored the first seven points of the second half to take command.

Natalie Leuzinger scored 23 for the Warriors, while Kailey Ketz scored 13 to lead Clayton.
