Laun-Smith in peak form at Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. - Beloit College sophomore Evan Laun-Smith improved on her national times with a pair of season-bests in Saturday's Titan Challenge hosted by UW-Oshkosh.

Laun-Smith crossed the finish line in 9.06 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, a top-20 time in the nation this season in NCAA Division III. Her finals time of 9.16 was fourth in the meet.

The Beloit Memorial High School grad notched a national top-20 leap in the triple jump. Her leap of 11.45 meters (37-6.75) was good for second place in the stacked meet Saturday. Teammates Lena Ramsey (11.05 meters, 36-3) and Aleeshah Heinzen (10.82 meters, 35-6) finished fifth and eighth, respectively.

Laun-Smith, who holds a top-15 mark nationally in the long jump, posted a distance of 5.42 meters (17-9.5) Saturday to finish seventh.

• The Buccaneer women finished 10th and the men 12th out of 14 teams. The competing teams included five men's and women's teams ranked in the top 10 in the Midwest Region in the latest U.S. Track and FIeld and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

Melissa Pelkey was fourth in the 800 in a season-best 2:20.88.

The Bucs' 4x400 combination of Aminah Crawford, Genesis Dade, Pelkey and Heinzen posted a season-best 4:13.60 for eighth.

Dan Arkes led the Buc men with a fifth place finish in the mile (4:26.0). The 4x400 foursome of Mauricio Penn, Charles Sandberg, Jason Dormon and Jack Klobucar narrowly missed out on a top-eight, finishing ninth (3:44.14).
