WAUSAU, Wis. - The Rock County Fury lost to the No. 1-ranked Central Wisconsin Storm on Saturday, but gained a lot of confidence in the process.
After a scoreless first period, the Storm scored first at the 6:34 mark of the second, but at the 9:50 mark, Abby Humphrey passed the puck across the ice to Haley Knauf on a power play. Her shot was deflected, but Alyssa Knauf scored on the rebound to tie the game.
The Storm got the go-ahead goal at the top of the third period and the Fury couldn't answer. RC goalie Olivia Cronin had 21 saves.
"This was our best game we have had for backchecking and taking care of the front of our net," Fury head coach Luke Steurer said. "Our defense and forwards were working hard in front of our net to pick the extra players to stop backside scoring opportunities. The girls played a great game against the No. 1-ranked team at their rink."
• BOYS HOCKEY: MADISON WEST 6, BELOIT MEMORIAL 0 - The Purple Knights were outshot 54-10 Saturday, allowing two goals in the first period, three in the second and a sixth in the third.
Beloit goalie Aidan Wright had 48 saves.
