Mary Jane Szarzynski, age 91, of Manchester Township, Illinois passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 1, 2019.
Mary Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Alice Larson; her daughter, Kay Szarzynski; and her daughter-in-law, Cynthia Szarzynski.
Mary Jane is survived by her husband and lifelong companion, Leonard; her children: Glenn, Randy (Jeanne), Annie (Scott) Taylor, and Alan; her brothers and their wives: Stan (Pat) Larson, Jim (Carol) Larson, and Jerry (Carolyn) Larson; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mary Jane was born on September 12, 1927 to Ross and Alice Larson in Hooper, Nebraska. She grew up with her three brothers in Oregon, Wisconsin where her family had moved during the Great Depression. She attended and graduated from Oregon, Wisconsin High School in 1945 in a class of 17. That same year, on the weekend of July 4, Mary Jane met Leonard Szarzynski on a blind date. 4 years later, on August 13, 1949 she and Leonard married. This year, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Mary Jane and Leonard lived in Rockton from 1951 to 1964 and then in Manchester Township from 1964 to present. They also spent 2 years living in Canada, just outside of Montreal, in 1965-1967. During her life Mary Jane worked in a dentist's office and owned and operated her own cheese shop in Beloit, Wisconsin, but her family will remember her as a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She was a fantastic baker, consistently baking for church events and always heading home with no leftovers. She also mastered her own version of a family recipe of pierogis and passed on the recipe to her grandson, Chad. She also traveled to Europe, loved sunflowers and blueberries, was a member of Hope Evangelical Church in Roscoe, Illinois, and raised 5 children.
Funeral Ceremonies will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 2:00 at Hope Evangelical Free Church, 5656 Elevator Rd, Roscoe, IL. Burial will be in Rockton Township Cemetery, Rockton, IL. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Friday, September 6, 2019, at McCorkle Funeral Home- Rockton Chapel, 767 N. Blackhawk Blvd, Rockton, IL.
