Sandra Pearl Payton, 74, of South Beloit, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 surrounded by her family at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, Illinois.

Sandra was born on April 23, 1944 in El Paso, Texas, the daughter of Samuel Wall and Mignon Smith. She graduated high school in Marshall, Texas and moved to South Beloit, Illinois in the early 1960's. Sandra then attended and graduated in 1966 from Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi. Sandra was a teacher in the South Beloit School District for over 40 years. She mainly taught second grade, but also taught kindergarten and first grade for a few years.

Sandra was a longtime member of Wesley CME Church in Beloit, Wisconsin where she was a former director of children and youth ministries, a former church coordinator for Family Promise (formerly Hands of Faith), and served on the church missionary counsel. She was also a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association.

Sandra enjoyed attended her grandchildren's athletic events and other activities, going to church, spending time with her family and visiting her Texas Family. She deeply loved traveling the world. Her favorite trips usually happened during Spring Break.

Sandra is survived by her son, Craig (Shannon) Payton of Aurora, Illinois; daughter, Tolicia (Mark) Richards of South Beloit, Illinois; grandchildren, Ashlie, Malachi, Brianna, Kaitlin, Caleb, and Chase; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Hattie Berry, and Cornelia Dockins both of Aurora, Colorado; special cousin, Edwina Bell of Westmont, Illinois; close family friends, Patricia Knox and family, Abrilla Collins and family, Edna Howard and family, and Anne Willingham and family; her Wesley CME Church Family; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel Wall; mother, Mignon "Granny-Gran" Crosby; and stepfather, J.C. "Papa J" Crosby.

Funeral services are 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2019 at Wesley CME Church, 1760 Shore Drive, Beloit, Wisconsin 53511 with Reverend Vandy Harmon officiating. Visitation is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 12, 2019 at Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home, 424 Prospect Street, Beloit, Wisconsin 53511, and also one hour prior to the service on Friday at Wesley CME Church. Committal at Floral Lawns Cemetery will follow the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Wesley CME Church. Online condolences can be shared at www.hansengravitt.com.
