Jobless rates up across Wisconsin

MADISON - Unemployment rates increased between December and January in 71 of Wisconsin's 72 counties and they increased in all 33 of Wisconsin's largest communities.

Beloit reported an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent in January, up from 3.4 percent in December and up from 3.9 percent in January of 2018.

Beloit had the second highest unemployment rate in Wisconsin in January, coming behind Racine, which had a jobless rate of 5 percent in January, up from 4 percent in December.

Fitchburg and Madison tied for lowest unemployment rate among Wisconsin's largest communities, at 2.3 percent in January compared to 2 percent in December for both communities.

Nearby Janesville had an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent in January, up from 2.9 percent in December and up from 3.4 percent in January of 2018.

Rock County had an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent in January, up from 2.9 percent in December and up from 3.6 percent in January of 2018.

Adams County had the highest unemployment rate in the state at 6.8 percent in January compared to 5.5 percent in December.

It also was up from 6.1 percent reported in January of 2018.

Dane County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 2.4 percent in January, up from 2 percent in December and unchanged from 2.4 percent in January of 2018.

Unemployment rates increased between December and January in all Wisconsin counties except Florence County, which had an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent in January, down from 4.2 percent in December.

The statewide unemployment rate was 3 percent in January, unchanged from December, but up slightly from 2.9 percent in January of 2018.

The national unemployment rate was 4 percent in January, up slightly from 3.9 percent in December, but down from 4.1 percent in January of 2018.
