'Still making Beloit beautiful'

Print Article

A recent magazine article about Beloit mentioned in part, "pink petunias overflow their sidewalk beds."

Some decades ago when I was Beloit's city engineer some ladies called to ask permission to plant flowers in the downtown sidewalks. I called City Manager Herb Holt to set up a meeting. Herb was previously city manager at Holland, Michigan, which holds an annual tulip festival.

When the ladies asked permission to plant petunias Herb said, "Petunias? That's a weed."

The ladies were obviously shocked.

However, permission was granted and apparently the plantings have continued all these years.

It is very commendable that those ladies and others that followed put their time and efforts into beautifying downtown Beloit.
