'Spreading truth about tobacco'

Print Article

It is hard to believe there was once a time when smoking inside of places like restaurants, hotels and sports venues was allowed. I can't imagine walking into a local restaurant and being greeted by a cloud of cancer-causing smoke. This July 5th marks the 10th anniversary of the date Wisconsin's statewide smoke-free air law took effect and I'm so thankful for that.

The Smoke-Free Air Law protected people from secondhand smoke that is known to cause cancer. It has more than 7,000 chemicals, including at least 70 that can cause cancer. Wisconsin is in a better state now that employees and customers are safe from the dangers of secondhand smoke.

I enjoy smoke-free air because I play sports and I need a healthy pair of lungs to be the best I can be. Although our work is not over because our smoke-free air is being threatened by new products like e-cigarettes. People using these products are often young people my age that are being targeted by these companies that trick them into using these harmful products. That is why FACT group has continuously educated our peers about the harmful effects of e-cigarettes with different FACTivisms.

As a member of FACT, a youth driven advocacy movement spreading the truth about tobacco, I know the damage tobacco products can do to our bodies, our lives, and to all the people we care about. Our local FACT group in Beloit is excited to celebrate the anniversary of another year that we are able to enjoy public places without the hazard of secondhand cigarette smoke.
