'Do what's best for all students'

Print Article

I'm appalled at the continued actions of the School District of Beloit school board president and several school board members that make it clear they have no interest in doing what's best for all students in the district and only represent the narrow interests of their own social group.

They refuse to vote on the Diversity Plan that was recommended for approval by the Personnel Committee in April - and was developed by a committee of school staff and community members. They have demoted the equity coordinator without cause and the board president is misusing procedural rules to block the Equality Committee from meeting at all today. This board is penalizing the assistant superintendent, the equity coordinator and Equality Committee, the majority of whom are people of color, more than others and the injustice is obvious to me and many others who have been continually ignored. This is a racist power play that has created instability for students and staff and has created difficulties in recruiting and retention.

Nearly all U.S. schools and districts have diversity plans and equity policies in place because it's best practice in educating students in the 21st century and the right thing to do, especially for a district that is nearly 70% minority students. We only lose as a community by blocking the talent and full development of any of our students, and research shows that all students' education suffers without a deeper understanding of the world from multiple perspectives and experiences. These actions are cheating all of our students, especially the most marginalized.

Some Bbard members may want to go back in time, but our kids (and most of their parents) want to move forward. So it's about time this board starts fulfilling their public responsibility to the students and families of this district.
