JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Just as they had in 2017, Illinois College's 0-3 Blueboys used a game with Beloit College to not only pick up a victory, but also rev up their offense.
Playing their 1,000th game in school history, the Blueboys roared to a 49-0 halftime lead on their way to a 63-20 romp Saturday night.
One of the few highlights for Beloit was the play of freshman Juan Reyes, who collected 15 carries for 115 yards and one touchdown.
The Bucs received the opening kickoff, but a fumble pushed them back to their own 10-yard line and three plays later punter Andy Berlin fielded a bad snap, but hit attempt was blocked. Dylon Ross scooped the ball up and scored the game's first touchdown. Zack DeWitt's extra-point made it 7-0 just 78 seconds into the game.
The field possession woes continued for the Bucs when a sack pinned them back at their 1-yard line. This time they got their punt away, but the Blueboys took over in Buc territory, leading to an 11-yard TD run by Shak Johnson.
IC still had time in the first quarter for a 66-yard drive with quarterback Drew Chance 4-for-4, including a 30-yard TD strike to Mason Farris for a 20-0 lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the Bucs as quarterback Erick Mitchell threw an interception and Chance needed just two pass plays to reach the end zone. A 24-yarder to Glen Gibbons Jr., found the end zone for a 28-0 lead. It became 35-0 when Gibbons returned a punt 73 yards for a score.
Gibbons burned the Bucs again on a screen pass with only a hustling Caleb Wachal preventing a TD by tackling him at the 2. A play later, Jason Barbour scored from the Wildcat formation for a 42-0 lead.
The Blueboys went to the ground to move the ball in position to score their final TD of the half. Chance hit Patton for the final 16 yards and a commanding 49-0 advantage.
The Bucs finally got on the board in the second half with a six-play, 51-yard drive that featured a 29-yard run by Reyes. The drive was capped by Mitchell's 5-yard TD strike to Tyler Korous. IC quickly answered with a 50-yard TD pass from Chance to Gibbons Jr. to make it 56-7 midway through the third quarter.
Beloit's defense helped out its offense twice in the fourth quarter. A fumble recovery by Patrick Nicolas gave Beloit the ball at the IC 26. Mitchell's two runs picked up 19 yards and Reyes took it the final 16 yards. Andy Berlin's PAT made it 56-14.
An interception by Broakkeen Sheffield gave Beloit the ball at the IC 34 and runs by Reyes set up a 1-yard TD dive by Mitchell. IC answered that score with a TD of its own for the 63-20 final.
• GAME OF CHANCE: Chance ended the game 18-for-27 for 278 yards and four touchdowns through the air. Patton ended as the top target with eight catches for 91 yards and a score, while Gibbons Jr. had six catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
Beloit quarterbacks Marcos Camacho and Mitchell combined to complete 14 of 34 attempts for 101 yards and a touchdown. Korous was on the receiving end of five completions tallying 38 yards and one TD.
Defensively, Silas Say recorded 10 tackles including six solo and four assisted. Xavier Haynes and Trey Bishop each added six tackles.
