Bucs edge Monmouth, 2-0

MOMNOUTH, Ill. - The Beloit College women's soccer team got goals from Midori Tanada and Candance Cunningham and downed Monmouth College, 2-0, on the road Sunday.

The Buccaneers registered fewer shots (18-11) than the Scots, but found the back of the net twice in the first half.

In the 13th minute, Tanada opened the scoring, finding the back of the net off an assist by Meghan McCarthy. Less than five minutes later, Cunningham gave Beloit a 2-0 lead.

Connor Keegan-Lloyd posted three saves in the first 45 minutes in goal for Beloit. In the second half, Kaitlyn Tomasin-Erickson was in net, stopping 11 shots on goal.

• VOLLEYBALL: Beloit opened MWC play with a 3-2 (14-25, 29-27, 22-25, 30-28, 15-8) win in a marathon match at Monmouth Saturday.

Beloit's defense was stellar with 10 total blocks at the net and 158 digs. Seven Bucs recorded double digit digs in the match. Allison Faber led Beloit at the net defensively with six block assists followed by Molly Muller's five. In the backcourt, Paige Wimbrow and Regina Guehlstorf registered 28 digs each.

Offensively, Eva Laun-Smith paced the Bucs with 17 kills in 43 attacks. She added 17 digs for the double-double and three blocks. Amanda Baran also recorded a double-double with double digit kills (16) and digs (21).

Wimbrow and Emily Stapay shared setting responsibilities tallying 25 and 21 assists respectively.

• MEN'S SOCCER: Beloit lost 1-0 on an overtime penalty kick at Monmouth College Sunday afternoon.

The Bucs thwarted 20 shots, including seven on goal until the overtime penalty.

The defenses kept the opposing offenses off the board through regulation. The Bucs' Jose Gutierrez fired a shot at the net in OT that was saved by the Scots' goalie. Beloit goalie Alex Lyon kept the game going with a save. Less than a minute later, the Bucs were called for a foul leading to a penalty kick. Monmouth's Lucas Sondgeroth took the kick, finding the back of the net for the game-winner.

Lyon had seven saves.
