Beloit man struck by van while walking named

BELOIT - A 49-year-old Beloit man who was hit by a van as he walked into the roadway on Pleasant Street on Monday has been identified.

Jose G. Lopez Vela received life threatening injuries after being struck at around 6:33 p.m. south of the crosswalk of Portland Avenue by driver Dennis D. Straub, 65, of Afton, according to Beloit police.

According to Communications Director Sarah Millard, Vela was still a patient at the hospital on Wednesday, noting that he was "alert and oriented." Straub cooperated with authorities and was not arrested as part of the incident, police said.
