'Is Wisconsin more dangerous?'

Print Article

I read in the paper that Scott Walker said Tony Evers would release murderers and rapists if he cuts the prison population by half. Let's talk facts, not scary misleading truths.

There are over 23,000 inmates in Wisconsin prisons, but only 10,000-11,000 are inmates who have been sentenced under Scott Walker's truth in sentencing and are serving the judge's imposed term of imprisonment. Over 7,000 are in prison because their community supervision has been revoked. These are men and women who have not been found guilty of any new crime and the vast majority do not present any danger to their communities. Approximately 6,000 are in prison under the old law, having already been in prison for over 19 years.

So yes, these men and women are rapists and murderers, but the DOC under Scott Walker gives them a low priority for the programs they need so they can be released on parole. Though many could successfully be released, Scott Walker wants it as difficult as possible for them to qualify for parole.

Scotland, Denmark and Finland each have approximately the same population as Wisconsin. Wisconsin incarcerates more persons than the combined incarcerated population of all three European states. Is Wisconsin 3 times more dangerous with Scott Walker as Governor?

So how does Scott Walker and the Republicans benefit from mass incarceration? It prevents the poor and minorities from voting against them.
