'Parents, get to know products'

Print Article

School will be starting soon and there are plenty of responsibilities that parents have in preparing for the new year, (school supplies, new clothes shopping). One suggestion for parents this busy school season, is to learn about the candy and fruit flavored tobacco products that are luring kids into lifelong tobacco addition.

E-cigarettes and JUUL have been on the rise in popularity, and the fruity flavors are appealing to youth. In a recent study by the CDC, it was noted that in Wisconsin the sale percentage of flavored e-cigarettes jumped 75 percent (from 12.1% in 2012 to 21.2% in 2016). These numbers are alarming.

As parents to these youth, there are opportunities we can take to lower these numbers. Policies prohibiting e-cigarettes in buildings around our communities, outside in our parks, and anywhere that our kids can get east access to using them, is a great start. Another idea is for parents to get to know these products, and what to be looking for. JUUL looks like a little flash drive, so for a parent looking for a typical e-cigarette, it goes unnoticed.

Parents can visit tobaccoischanging.com to learn more about these products and their health risks. This site also includes information on tobacco flavors and packaging, and how parents can help their children stay tobacco free. Parents can also learn more about policies that can be implemented in our areas by reaching out to your local tobacco prevention coalition, Youth2YCouth 4 Change.
