On Saturday, Aug. 11, 600 bicyclists ventured through Beloit on a ride that started in Dubuque, Iowa, and would finish in Kenosha, Wisconsin, which is a distance of 175 miles.
This is the fourth year of what is called the Ride Across Wisconsin (RAW). This event was a fund-raiser for the Wisconsin Bike Federation which is an advocacy group for bicycle and pedestrian issues/paths throughout the state of Wisconsin.
The Rock Bar & Grill along the beautiful Rock River served as a major rest stop for all the cyclists where they were provided lunch and energy drinks after the 105 mile section from Dubuque to Beloit. There were over 55 local volunteers who guided, welcomed and encouraged cyclists as they traversed through our community. Among the groups providing these volunteers were the Stateline Spinners, the Rock Trail Coalition, Beloit College and the Janesville Velo Club.
Entertainment at The Rock Bar & Grill consisted of the Beloit Memorial High School Pon Pon Squad, the Even Start Hispanic Dancers, a bagpiper, gospel singers, and Jim Giacalone on the accordion.
Beloit DPW, Beloit Police, Frito Lay, Old Fashioned Bakers (the cookies were scrumptious), the School District of Beloit and Boy Scout Troop 316. Gratitude is also extended to all the employees at The Rock Bar & Grill, who went out of their way to be a gracious host for this event.
A heartfelt thanks to everyone who pitched in to make this event happen in a very efficient manner. Everyone should feel "Beloit Proud" as many of the cyclists had very positive comments to make about their reception into our community.
