Man sentenced on heroin charge
A Beloit man was sentenced to 10 years and 10 months in prison Wednesday for possession with intent to deliver heroin.
Carl Hodges, 53, was sentenced in U.S. District Court - Western District of Wisconsin in Madison. He pleaded guilty to the charge Aug. 31.
Hodges was arrested April 23 in a traffic stop. A search of his car resulted in the seizure of 25 bags of heroin.
Chief U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb determined Hodges’ total drug conduct involved about 360 grams of heroin. At the time of his arrest, Hodges was on federal supervised supervision for being a felon found in possession of a firearm.
Janesville flu clinic canceled
The Rock County Health Department has canceled the H1N1 vaccination clinics that previously were scheduled in Janesville Schools Nov. 10, 11 and 12.
The health department had scheduled H1N1 or Swine Flu vaccination clinics at Edison Middle School, Franklin Midde School and Monroe Elementary School in Janesville next week. However, because of low supplies of the vaccine, the school clinics have been canceled. The department previously canceled school clinics in Clinton, the Beloit Turner School District and the School District of Beloit.
There is an H1N1 clinic being held today from 3 - 7 p.m. at the Beloit Public Library at the Eclipse Center (formerly the Beloit Mall).
Baldwin’s staffer visits Orfordville
ORFORDVILLE — Helen Forbeck, field representative for Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, will be holding office hours on behalf of Baldwin in Orfordville from 1:45 -2:45 p.m. Nov. 10 at Village Hall, 106 North Center St.
Citizens are encouraged to attend if there are questions or comments about legislation, federal grants or doing work with the federal government.

Fire strikes Beloit home
Two occupants escaped from a fire that broke out in a Beloit residence on Wednesday late afternoon.
The fire at the single family residence owned by Allan Bartz on the 1500 block of Farwell Avenue was caused by a grease fire on the stove, according to reports.
The fire damaged the kitchen area, and the first floor was damaged by smoke. The property valued at $42,900 sustained $4,000 worth of structural damage and $500 worth of contents damage.
County to pay settlement
JANESVILLE — Marvin and Connie Vike, of Janesville, will receive $240,000 from Rock County after a settlement was reached for disabilty discrimination.
According to Corporation Counsel Jeff Kuglitsch, Rock County will pay a $150,000 deductible, and the county’s liability insurance will cover the remaining $90,000. The money to pay the deductible comes from their liability fund.
“It’s the first disability discrimination I can recall,” Kuglitsch said. “And the county did what we felt we needed to do in this matter.”
