DETROIT, Mich. - Despite the lagging economy, auto makers continue to work hard developing new models and new technologies to show the public at events such as the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Although car sales are down considerably and may not rebound soon, there are still customers out there buying cars and manufacturers need to have competitive products to offer them. These are some of the new products you will see at this season's auto shows and in dealer showrooms.

General Motors is bringing out a number of new cars in the coming months. Look for an all new Buick LaCrosse, a new Pontiac Solstice Coupe, a new Cadillac CTS Sportwagon and a redesigned Cadillac CTX. Coming soon from Chevrolet is an all new Camaro, the Cruze, a stylish replacement for the current Cobalt and a redesigned Equinox.

Ford introduced an all new Taurus, a new Fusion and Fusion Hybrid and a new Shelby GT 500, a high performance version of the new Mustang. Coming in about a year will be the new subcompact Fiesta from Ford of Europe. This year Lincoln is introducing a redesigned MKZ and an all new luxury crossover, the MKT.

Toyota brings a new Prius to the market, the new Venza crossover and a restyled Camry. Kia shows off its new Soul, a boxy subcompact similar to the Scion xB. Honda reintroduces the hybrid Insight, this time as a four door compact similar to the Toyota Prius. Mini is introducing its new convertible. Mazda is showing off its recently released Mazda6 and Mazda3 five door.

New technologies are allowing manufacturers to achieve ever-higher fuel economy ratings. Ford's Ecoboost system combines direct injection fuel delivery with turbocharging to wring performance out of smaller, more fuel-efficient engines. General Motors is also adopting direct injection in many of its cars and, like Ford, is installing six speed automatic transmissions in more vehicles to squeeze even more miles out of every gallon.

General Motors, Ford and Toyota all offer a variety of hybrid cars and all plan to expand their offerings in the future. Volkswagen, along with other European brands, will rely on advanced clean diesel technology to achieve both good performance and high fuel economy.

Chrysler is developing its “range extended” hybrid technology for upcoming models and is investing in all-electric development, as well.
