Orfordville area home burns
ORFORDVILLE - Several fire departments responded to a house fire north of Orfordville Monday evening.
The fire was reported at 9:45 p.m. at 1629 S. Coon Island Road, about two miles north of Orfordville in Plymouth Township. When firefighters arrived at 9:54 p.m., they saw the attached garage fully engulfed in flame.
The family was evacuated and taken to a safe location. Firefighters continued to battle the fire as it began to consume the house.
Deputies from the Rock County Sheriff's Office and fire departments from Orfordville, Footville, Brodhead, Janesville, Evansville, Town of Turtle and Beloit were at the fire.
No damage estimate was available this morning.
Deputy fires gun at suspect
ELKHORN - A Walworth County Sheriff's Deputy fired his gun at a fleeing suspect Monday.
According to sheriff's department reports, Gerald E. Bunder, 26, of Delavan, was identified at the Walworth County Judicial Center. He was wanted for traffic charges from Iowa and Dane counties. He was told he was under arrest, but he fled to the parking lot and got into his car.
Deputy Brandon Beecroft, who has been with the department for seven years, ordered Bunder to stop and turn off his car. When Bunder backed the car up, Bunder fired his weapon into the vehicle.
Delavan Police and Town of Delavan Police later located Bunder near Interstate 43 and Highway X. He was taken into custody. Bunder was not injured.
Beecroft was placed on administrative duty as is customary when there is an investigation following an officer firing his weapon. The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation.
Snow day
to be made up
Elementary and middle school students in the School District of Beloit must attend school an extra day this month.
Although the district accounted for a snow day in its calendar, it must make up for the snow day on Dec. 19 to comply with state guidelines.
High school students are not affected due to the way conferences are scheduled.
Elementary schools will make up the day on Jan. 30, which was originally scheduled for parent-teacher conferences. Students will go to school in the morning and be dismissed at 11:15 a.m. Conferences will continue that afternoon.
Morning early childhood and 4K students will be dismissed at their normal time that morning. Students in those afternoon programs will make up the day on June 10.
Breakfast will be served Jan. 30.
Middle school students will make up their snow day on the Friday of their scheduled parent teacher conference week.
Volleyball
players sought
Registration for the 2009 Winterfest Coed Volleyball Tournament is due by Jan. 21 at Leisure Services, 1003 Pleasant St.
Team registration is $100 and must include a combination of two guys, two girls; two guys, one girl or one guy, two girls.
Games will be played at Beloit Memorial High School Field House on Jan. 24. For more details, call 608-364-2890.
